Ruby O'Reilly, Staffordshire

“This training has given me a much deeper understanding of calf growth and development.”

Ruby O’Reilly, from Eccleshall YFC in Staffordshire, recently moved started working at a large calf-rearing unit. She successfully applied for a £750 training grant from the Worshipful Company of Farmers to complete an advanced calf-rearing course to help her career progression.

Ruby is passionate about farming and in particular livestock care. She started farming five years ago when she was aged 15 and hasn’t looked back.

“I left college to pursue a full-time career in dairy farming on a Kiwi-style farm, where I worked for three years,” explained Ruby. “After three years on the dairy farm, I decided it was time for a change. I wanted to focus specifically on calf development, so I took on a new role at a large calf-rearing unit.”

When Ruby spotted the opportunity to apply for a training grant through YFC, she leapt at the opportunity to further her skills.

“I was able to complete an advanced calf-rearing course that included eight hours of one-to-one training with a vet, thanks to the generous grant from the Worshipful Company of Farmers,” said Ruby who completed the course with Nantwich Farm Vets.

“This training has given me a much deeper understanding of calf growth and development. I have learnt why nutrition is such a key factor, what different medications do, and which treatments are most effective for various illnesses.

“I will be able to use this knowledge every day to improve my skills and confidence when working with calves. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity.”

Outside of work, Ruby plays an active role in Eccleshall YFC and says the club has pushed her “outside of her comfort zone” and developed her skills and connections in the sector.

“I would recommend anyone who can should join their local YFC. You can take part in stock judging, farm tours, competitions, socials, and so much more,” said Ruby. “It’s also a great way to meet friends, and it opens the door to countless opportunities – this grant being one of them!

“I would like to thank Nantwich Farm Vets for providing an excellent course, and a huge thank you to the Worshipful Company of Farmers for awarding me the grant that made it possible.”

YFC members can apply for a 2026 bursary until the end of June 2026.
