Representing Young Farmers

Representing Young Farmers

NFYFC represents its farming members and gives a voice to the next generation of farmers through YFC AGRI.

Made up of YFC members from across England and Wales, this group are passionate about agriculture and the countryside. They meet regularly to discuss the changes in the industry, the impact on young farmers and ways in which the organisation can help promote agriculture and offer its support to the next generation.

YFC AGRI is responsible for a diverse range of work, including representing young farmers' views nationally and regionally and developing opportunities for training, events and resources for YFC members.

We have a group of dedicated YFC members who make up YFC AGRI – and they represent the views of farming members and help to shape our work in this area. Together we have created a living AGRI Ambition document, which highlights our aims for Your Future Countryside.

2026-27 Defra Supported Projects

YFC AGRI receives support from Defra for agriculture-related projects for the next generation. This NFYFC programme of activities funded by Defra for 2026-2027 complements strategic priorities within Defra’s business plan, to develop a world leading food and farming industry, a thriving rural economy and a cleaner, healthier environment.

It will also contribute to Defra’s current and future agricultural policy work whilst also meeting NFYFC’s key strategic aims of advancing education and knowledge of agriculture and rural affairs and helping the next generation to play an active part in their local communities.

2026-27 NFYFC Defra supported projects comprise:

  • Drone training: introductory online knowledge exchange webinars and a scholarship offer for drone training, in collaboration with AutoSpray Systems and Hutchinsons.
  • Career, advice and Network Information Mapping: Simplifying navigation for careers, networks and information opportunities within the food and farming sectors in collaboration with relevant industry groups.
  • Leadership training for future industry and rural community leaders: Working with the Society of Agriculture, NFYFC will develop and deliver appropriate introductory leadership training for future industry and rural community leaders. A bespoke ‘junior’ leadership offer is to be piloted with YFC county chairs and NFYFC Council members, which was requested by a young, professional YFC member due to the expense and time constraints of current industry leadership training.

Responding to consultations

A large part of work by YFC AGRI is responding to consultations, where ideas or areas of concern are raised, and collaborative opportunities considered.

Rural future research

NFYFC launched a survey, ‘Your Post-Brexit Rural Future’ in 2020 aimed at giving young people living and working in the countryside a voice on their current situation and how they felt about the future. Funded by Defra and led by the NFYFC and Rose Regeneration, the findings highlighted the key issues faced by those who wanted to remain working and living in a rural location – now and in the future. Read the survey findings here.
