Thank you to YFC volunteers from NFYFC President

Thank you to YFC volunteers from NFYFC President

It is one of the busiest – and in my view, the best – times of the year for YFCs.

Rallies and shows, competition finals and summer socials are dominating calendars. The happiest of days spent making memories.

Behind the scenes, there are thousands of volunteers dedicated to delivering these activities to support the personal development of rural young people.

I know from experience how much work goes into organising events such as, for example, a rally. Committee members dedicate hours of their time preparing the marketing, sorting the venue, fixing the schedule, managing the risk assessments… the list goes on.

Without volunteers YFC simply wouldn’t exist.

In addition to club officials – who we already know dedicate up to 14 hours a week volunteering for YFC – there are also former members who continue to give their time. These steadfast supporters mentor current members, host events, and provide invaluable support to clubs, long after their own YFC journey has ended.

Whether you’re a trustee, part of an advisory committee or a club officer who ensures weekly meetings take place – please know your role is very much valued.

YFCs sit at the heart of their rural communities, and they have earned their place. I have seen the YFC fundraisers and the community projects that are quietly (and sometimes not so quietly) taking place every week across England and Wales.

These acts of kindness are making a difference in our local areas – not only for those receiving support, but also for those giving it. Volunteering is a powerful force for good, offering meaningful rewards to everyone involved.

Club and county officers should feel proud knowing their volunteering is helping to create safe and supportive environments for young people – as well as benefiting the communities they serve.

I feel proud to be the figurehead of this incredible organisation and enjoy being part of a network of volunteers who are making a difference.

This Volunteers Week (2-8 June), please find time to thank the volunteers involved in your club or county. Take this week as an opportunity to also reflect on the impact your voluntary work has made – not just on others, but on yourself too.

Thank you for your generosity, compassion and kindness. Your support has not gone unnoticed, and it continues to strengthen our organisation in so many meaningful ways.

John Lee OBE DL NFYFC President 2025-26
