Scholars to find opportunities at the Oxford Farming Conference

Scholars to find opportunities at the Oxford Farming Conference

Two YFC members who have earned scholarships to the Oxford Farming Conference in January will have the opportunity to explore current and future farming policies, as well as new opportunities for farmers.

Hannah Rees from Pembrokeshire and Nathanial Watkins from Gloucestershire were awarded the NFYFC scholarships courtesy of the Worshipful Company of Farmers.

The theme at this year’s conference is Facing Change, Finding Opportunity. Speakers will look at the ways farmers can adapt, with the help of science and new practices, to the changing natural world and how that can inspire innovators and leaders in the sector.

Both YFC members will be involved in the two-day conference and will have the opportunity for peer-to-peer networking, be able to share views and ideas, and gain access to key skills development training.

Hannah, who is from a dairy farm in Pembrokeshire, is a Technical Sales Specialist for a company specialising in soil, plant, and animal nutrition and welfare. Eager to advance her career, she saw the Oxford Farming Conference as a valuable opportunity to learn from industry leaders.

“I’m looking forward to networking and gaining insights from different perspectives through the speakers and discussions at the conference,” said Hannah, who was surprised to be awarded the scholarship. “Things like this don’t happen to someone like me! It’s another valuable opportunity YFC has given me and I’m so excited for the next few months!”

Joining her at the conference will be Nathanial, a second-year Agriculture student at Hartpury University, who also works on a large dairy farm on the Herefordshire border.

Despite not coming from a farming background, Nathanial is passionate about building a career in the sector and applied for the scholarship to help him establish a strong foundation.

“I’m extremely grateful to be selected as a scholar, both for the conference and the training days. I’m excited to learn more about navigating change and uncovering opportunities in the months ahead,” he shared.

The Oxford Farming Conference is 8-10 January 2025 and tickets to attend are on sale here.
