Groundswell Festival opportunity for YFC members

Groundswell Festival opportunity for YFC members

An ambition to farm and a commitment to representing young farmers has inspired Fergus Starkey’s career and YFC journey. As the current YFC AGRI Vice Chair, Fergus, from Brandon and Wolston YFC in Warwickshire, is encouraging YFC members to join him at this year’s Groundswell Festival.

Q. How are you involved in agriculture?

I don’t have a family farm, but I would eventually like to farm. My background is in law and I am involved in agricultural policy supporting NFU members. I also try to ensure young farmers are considered in ongoing policy developments – and this underpins the work we do in the YFC AGRI Steering Group.

Q. What are some of the key issues YFC AGRI are discussing?

We are discussing issues such as the proposed changes to inheritance tax, the changing landscape of agricultural and wider land use policies and their impact on the next generation of farmers.

We are continuing to monitor the UK’s recent trade agreements to ensure that protections for our standards are upheld, safeguarding future generations from facing a weaker market environment than today’s farmers.

Q. You're planning a YFC AGRI visit to Groundswell - why are you encouraging members to go there?

Groundswell works as an ideal melting pot of ideas, which was one of the reasons we thought it would be a great opportunity for members to attend.

The range of speakers and stands at the show covers such a wide variety of topics that there’s something new for everyone to learn. It’s also a chance to engage in meaningful discussions, challenge our perspectives, and step outside our comfort zones. This opportunity to be both challenged and inspired – while gaining practical insights to take back and apply on your own farm – is a rare one that shouldn’t be missed.

Q. How can YFC members meet you at Groundswell?

First of all, take advantage of the discounted tickets available to YFC members. There is a 35% discount available for YFC members on the Groundswell website by selecting the 'Student' ticket option when purchasing.

A YFC meeting point on both days will be at the awning/seating area next to the food stalls at 9.30am and 12.30pm for members who’d like to explore Groundswell as a dedicated group. I’d also be more than happy to discuss any ideas, thoughts or questions members have relating to YFC AGRI and what we do.

Q. What plans does YFC AGRI have for the rest of the year?

We have a lot of ongoing work and plans which could provide opportunities for young farmers. If you are interested in the latest developments and opportunities to grow your own skills, then join one of our future meetings, speak to your YFC AGRI rep or look out for more information from us as the year progresses.

The next online YFC AGRI meeting will be on Tuesday, 24 June, 7.30pm. Contact Sarah Palmer for more information and if you would like to attend.
