Drought implications for farmers and YFC activities

The worst drought in 50 years is piling pressure on farmers and could also have impacts on YFC activities in the coming months.

YFC AGRI recently took part in a farming roundtable to share Young Farmers’ views on the impact the drought is having on harvests and crops. Members will continue to be represented at future industry and Defra meetings.

The drought could also affect forthcoming YFC outdoor activities, such as ploughing matches. The hard, dry ground could make popular autumnal events such as these difficult or even impossible to host without adequate rainfall, which also brings the risk of flooding.

With the threat of wildfires from the dry grass, YFCs also need to consider the impact of all outdoor activities they host, especially if there are plans to involve campfires and BBQs. While using standard, reusable barbecues on private property remains legal, extreme caution and safety measures are strongly advised.

With many areas of the country under a hose pipe ban, it’s important that YFCs use water responsibly too in recreational activities, such as slip and slides.

YFC members practising for sports competitions, also need to be aware of dry, cracked and uneven pitches or fields caused by the prolonged hot and dry weather. These hard surfaces are more dangerous to play on creating safety hazards from falls.

Seeing so much of the countryside baked in brown rather than green may also be causing a rise in anxiety. YFC members might be concerned about the effects of climate change and be worried about the financial impact on family farms.

NFYFC’s Head of Safeguarding Neil Lowther said:

“Following a long, hot summer, the effects of the drought are being felt by everyone. It’s important YFC members look out for each other. There are lots of support organisations out there who are available to listen and provide advice. Please encourage anyone who is feeling anxious to speak to family and friends or call a support organisation.”

The Farming Advice Service has a page dedicated to the many organisations that can offer support to farmers, including mental health and the environment. There are also organisations listed on NFYFC's Signposting to Support page.
