Club Officer check-in: 5 Minutes with...Annabel Cook, North Somerset YFC

As Chair of North Somerset YFC, 19-year-old Annabel Cook has had to learn how to manage different personalities and make balanced judgement calls for her 50 members.

Q. What responsibilities surprised you the most?

How much organising goes on behind the scenes at events.

Q. How is your club structured?

We meet every Monday as a whole club. We are predominantly an intermediate-aged club, with business meetings once a month and activities in between.

Q. How do you balance your club duties with studies/work, and personal life?

I am currently completing a five-year REALM Degree Apprenticeship with Harper Adams University. As I work full-time and have learning weeks away, I try to stay on top of my responsibilities with YFC and assist the committee with any organising that needs my support.

Q. Name a skill you’ve developed through this role?

My confidence has developed by talking to a wide range of people and ages. This has also helped me with my work.

Q. How does your club welcome new members?

We have a new members' evening during September each year with fun team games to mix old and new members.

Q. Can you share a challenge you’ve faced as a young leader in the club?

One challenge I have faced is learning how to navigate different personality traits and to reach fair and balanced decisions.

Q. Tell us your best meeting idea this year?

Our club's favourite activity was playing rounders on the beach in the summer.

We plan our Mondays a month in advance to ensure we have an exciting variety of activities lined up!

Q. What tip would you give to others in a similar role?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help, it is daunting doing such a big role, but your committee, advisory and county organisers are there to help you!
