Call for expressions of interest/applications - Board Members

NFYFC is seeking two trustees with substantial experience in the charity or not‑for‑profit sector to join its Board and help drive the delivery of our five‑year strategy.

For this recruitment round, we are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in the following areas:

Communications, Strategic Engagement, Media

We are looking for a Communications / Strategic Engagement / Media Management specialist Trustee to join our Board and help elevate our organisation’s profile, influence and credibility.

Or

Youthwork, Safeguarding

We are seeking a Youthwork or Safeguarding specialist to join our Board and strengthen our mission to support young people through high‑quality, inclusive youth work and safeguarding practice.

The roles combine strategic oversight with hands-on support. We are looking for trustees who are willing to roll up their sleeves, work constructively with the Executive team, and help guide the organisation to deliver its aims.

What you’ll do

As a trustee, you will:

  • Contribute to the development and delivery of NFYFC’s strategy
  • Support strong charity governance, including strategic communications and engagement OR youthwork/safeguarding
  • Provide informed challenge and practical advice to the Board and Executive team
  • Assist maintaining confidence of funders, regulators and stakeholders
  • Fulfil the legal duties of a charity trustee and contribute fully to Board decision-making

What we’re looking for

You’ll bring:

  • Significant experience within the charity or not-for-profit sector
  • A strong understanding of charity governance, compliance, and strategic communications or youthwork/safeguarding
  • The ability to communicate clearly and pragmatically
  • A collaborative, supportive approach and willingness to contribute beyond board meetings
  • An interest in supporting young people, rural communities, or membership-led organisations
  • Previous trustee experience is desirable but not essential.

Time commitment

  • Board meetings (typically 6 per year – a mix of online and physical meetings)
  • Additional involvement as needed to support the delivery of the strategy

Applications are welcomed from those independent of YFC membership who can:

  • Contribute to the leadership and direction of the NFYFC, and
  • Provide insight and perspective of the needs of YFC members, with an appetite to develop the existing skills of YFC members, and
  • Bring creativity to the Board.

The primary responsibility is to act as one of the Directors / Managing (Charity) Trustees of the NFYFC. The Board of Management (Directors / Charity Trustees) must act as the guardians of the financial, legal & intellectual (reputation) integrity of the organisation – in other words, to safeguard the finance, risk & reputation of the organisation – this is a legal responsibility of every Managing Trustee of every charitable organisation.

Those expressing an interest in this post will need personal authority, integrity and the ability to provide sound objective advice. They should be well organised, resilient and have knowledge/experience that will contribute to steering the direction of this organisation working across England and Wales as well as the ability to champion, influence and support the organisation as it develops.

The roles therefore require confident decision makers with excellent communication and people skills.

A NFYFC Board recruitment panel will review all Expressions of Interests and arrange to meet with those meeting the required criteria for these posts.

Trustee/Director positions are subject to NFYFCs safe recruitment processes, which will include the taking up of references and a DBS check.

If the recruitment panel nominates more than one candidate, an election will be held at a meeting of the NFYFC Council (the appointing body) and a vote will be taken. The results will be announced at the same NFYFC Council meeting.
