Representing YFC members in SFI discussions

YFC members’ concerns about the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) announcement were represented recently at the Farming Organisations’ Roundtable with Food Security and Rural Affairs Minister Daniel Zeichner and industry organisations.

YFC AGRI Chair Robbie Tuer attended the meeting, which was organised by the NFU, and included attendees from a wide range of farming organisations, including the CLA, Livestock Auctioneers Association, Sustainable Food Trust, the TFA, Soil Association and Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers.

NFYFC is a regular attendee at various industry and Defra meetings, giving the organisation an opportunity to raise issues that are affecting young farming members.

This was Robbie's first time representing NFYFC at the meeting, and he ensured he was well-prepared by gathering feedback from YFC AGRI members beforehand.

Robbie said: “Never has an announcement stimulated such a conversation in our YFC AGRI group by members who are affected by recent Government decisions.

“Last week’s announcement had a significant impact, particularly on new entrants and next-generation farmers already struggling with an uneven playing field. However, the effects extend even further, disrupting generational business partnerships, business planning, current and future business viability, and the many allied industries that provide essential advice and support.

“We are aware of the funding challenges the Government are facing and we are keen to continue constructive conservations.

“NFYFC values continued representation at the Farming Organisations’ Roundtable meeting so we can represent the views that have been shared by our members on policy decisions.”

Other industry joint work where YFC is represented is currently in progress.

YFC AGRI’s next online meeting is on 1 April 2025, where Defra officials will be attending for further discussion.
