New podcast supports young people to create a vision for their future

YFC members can discover expert insights on how to plan for their future in a special podcast episode recorded at a New Voices training event last year.

NFYFC’s New Voices project, a collaboration with Lantra and Landex, and supported by Defra, offered free training followed by a podcast to continue the learning and support.

The New Voices episode, called Empowering your journey to forge the future you want, was recorded at a bespoke training event designed for the next generation of students, young farmers, and new entrants in the land-based and environment sector. Led by business coach Amy Fry, the training session focused on reflecting on the future and effectively communicating that vision to others.

The podcast builds on the training, inspiring young people to visualise their future and explore practical steps to make it a reality.

Hosted by rural podcaster Ben Eagle, listeners will hear from participants at the training event, as well as NFYFC’s AGRI Manager Sarah Palmer, business coach Amy Fry, Head of Landscaping at Lantra, David Fisher, and current NFYFC AGRI Chair Luke Cox.

Common goal

During the podcast, David Fisher speaks about the benefits of collaborating with organisations such as NFYFC.

“We have a common goal of trying to help industry and to being new people in the sector,” explains David. “The collaboration is a great one because they [NFYFC] bring forward their members, it broadens our horizons, and we get to work closely with people for the greater good.”

While you might think a ‘vision’ is only meant for businesses, there are benefits for people to create a personal vision too. It acts as a ‘compass’ to decision making, as well as motivating us to achieve more.

Creating your own vision

YFC members can follow guidance in the podcast to create their own vision – which is ultimately about knowing your destination so you can take steps to move in the right direction.

“It really inspires action, it drives motivation and it allows you to hold yourself to account,” says Amy Fry about the benefits of creating a vision. “During these times of adversity and uncertainty – it gives a focus and helps you navigate those challenges while also guides you to make the right decisions.”

The podcast includes details of how to create your own Vision House to help plan your future.

How to create a Vision House

Create your own Vision House, following these simple steps.

  1. Draw a house, where each part of the house represents a different element of the journey to reach your vision.
  2. At the top of the house – write your vision in the roof area. This is where you ultimately want to be.
  3. In the rafters, write your purpose, and then add three journey goals or objectives to achieve this purpose
  4. Further divide these goals into three key actions you can take in the short term.
  5. At the bottom of the house, in the foundations, write the key values that are important to you.

It’s important to break everything down into manageable steps so you can follow a path that is true to yourself and will ultimately get you to where you want to be.
