Freya Butler from Newport YFC in East Riding of Yorkshire completed a Level 2 City & Guilds tractor driving and operations course in November 2023. The course was supported by funding from the Worshipful Company of Farmers and Freya shares her experience of studying at Bishop Burton agricultural college in East Yorkshire.
Over the course of three days, I learned about the importance of tractor safety, as well as the legislation for operating tractors. I learned how to use a pick-up hitch and attach/detach and tip a trailer as well as attaching a fertiliser spinner with three-point linkage, PTO and hydraulic pipes.
As part of my assessment I had to do pre safety checks on the tractor, identify the different parts of the tractor and attach/detach, reverse and tip a trailer. I also needed to attach/detach a fertiliser spinner and talk through the different hazards such as crush zones and the relevant legislation.
I was pleased to pass my level 2 qualification and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity thanks to the Worshipful Company of Farmers.
The course helped to broaden my knowledge on the technicalities of tractor operations and I will build on these skills. The course also helped build my confidence in taking out vintage tractors on more tractor runs and how to operate them safely and confidently.
Many thanks to the course leader for teaching me over the three days.
