NFYFC President Nigel Owens

Nigel Owens, MBE was elected President of NFYFC in August 2020 during the organisation's first ever online Annual General Meeting.

Nigel is a former member of Llanarthne YFC, and held the offices of club Secretary and Chairman. He is also a previous president of the Wales Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs.

Nigel is an international rugby union referee – and is the current world record holder for most test matches refereed. He is also a TV presenter, hosting shows on S4C (Welsh language TV channel).

In the 2016 Birthday Honours, Nigel was appointed a Member of the Order of British Empire (MBE) for services to sport and is a fellow of Cardiff University.

Nigel was brought up and lives in Carmarthenshire and is a Welsh language speaker. Before becoming a professional rugby union referee his career included working on a farm and a youth worker. Recently he has rekindled his farming career and farms near Llanelli.

Nigel said: “It is an honour to be elected as the President of the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs. I have been involved with the Welsh Federation for many years so it’s really exciting to now extend my experience to the wider organisation.

“I am passionate about farming and see YFCs as an important stepping-stone for many young people to start or further their careers in this industry. YFCs have a challenging year ahead with the impact of the pandemic changing the way they operate but I hope my election will offer some encouragement and enthusiasm for clubs."
