Take time to do to do something for others

There has been no greater mobilisation of volunteers and schemes to help the general public since the second World War. The nation is certainly in need of kindness and Young Farmers have been showing just how we support our local communities in times of crisis and are willing to help.

Good for mental health 

Helping other people is good for our mental health. The fact that you have changed someone else’s life for the better, will bring you both happiness, so it is a win-win situation! Make sure that you are keeping within all the guidelines that are current when doing something for others, so you both keep safe.

Sense of belonging 

Supporting others will give you a sense of belonging and help you feel connected to the cause you are trying to support or the person you are helping. These connections give us a sense of purpose and worth, both valuable for your mental health, especially to combat depression.

Small acts  

It doesn’t have to be grand gestures; small acts of kindness are great ways of showing others that you care. The effect of doing something without a big fanfare is just as rewarding. It can also be easier to achieve if we don’t have much capacity ourselves.

Think how you can help others 

Think of a few things that would make someone else’s day and see how many you can achieve. The possibilities are endless, even in the current situation of social distancing. If you don’t want to go solo, see what is happening local to you and get involved. It will be a positive step towards keeping your mental health healthy!

If you need urgent help

If you are struggling with your mental health right now, it is essential that you seek help. Talking to someone and explaining how you are feeling could be the first step to feeling better.

If you are feeling stressed, anxious or depressed there are great online resources available to help you manage and improve your mental health.

Don’t suffer in silence with your mental health. There are people ready and willing to help you, to talk to you and to help you to understand what is going on for you right now.

If you feel that you are having a mental health crisis, emergency or breakdown, you need to seek immediate expert advice and assessment.
