Recipe challenge

Do you have a brilliant budget-busting recipe idea?

NFYFC is searching for SIX of the best affordable and nutritious recipe ideas from YFC members.

This fun challenge supports the motion that YFC members passed at NFYFC’s Annual General Meeting earlier this year to promote British food and farming. It also backs one of the aims in the Government’s Food Strategy to ensure secondary school children leave school knowing how to cook at least six healthy recipes.

We want Young Farmers to use their skills and knowledge to create recipe ideas that use sustainably produced and sourced ingredients that don’t cost the earth.

The best six recipes will get to feature in a new NFYFC recipe book and will be shared widely to help inspire more cooking in schools.

How to enter

We are looking for simple, easy-to-cook, tasty and nutritious recipes that can be made on a budget. We want YFC members to show their skills in coming up with affordable recipes that use British produce.

1. The ingredients used in your dish must be enough to feed four people.

2. The price of your recipe must not exceed £1.50 per head.

3. You must try to source British produce (better still if it's produced locally) for your ingredients locally or demonstrate sustainable production (ie low food miles).

4. In your method, try to think about cooking times – we will be awarding more marks for those dishes that limit energy consumption (i.e reduced time in the oven, fewer food miles).

5. Your entry will need to include ingredients with quantities, information about where you sourced your produce and a method statement that explains how to make the dish.

6. You can choose to make a dish suitable for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This can be sweet or savoury.

7. Deadline for entries - 18 September 2022.

The best six recipes will be shared nationwide during National Young Farmers’ Week in October.
